JH Students with BooksEarly on this semester, these junior high students were learning how to write letters in their Language! class.  Thinking about an audience for their letters, their teacher, Ms. Mayo, asked the students to write letters to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.

The students were learning about Egypt and mummies in class and were growing more and more interested in the topic.  They were even using Smithsonian tools and articles in class to learn more about mummies.  So, when the time came, the student wrote their letters asking for more information about Egypt and mummies.

This spring, Ms. Mayo heard back!  Dr. Hunt of the Smithsonian emailed and told her that he received the letters and would be very happy to share more information with the students.  He emailed a list of resources the students could use online in the classroom.

He also sent a package to the students.  The package included a number of books on Egypt, how to make and research mummies, and even a book on the anthropology of Alaska, specifically the Aleutian Islands!

Needless to say, the class was thrilled to receive their package!  They were surprised that anyone had read, let alone answered, their letters.  They immediately began to explore the books.

The books will be kept in the school library for future classes to use when they start learning about Egypt and mummies.

Big thanks again to Dr. Hunt for not only responding to their letters but also for taking the time to respond and send the thoughtful gift.
